Allo Nathascha,

I want to let you know how much I enjoy your videos and also your blog. You have a wonderful bunch of birds. So jealous of your nice flock, and they all seem to get along. I also am french-canadian, move to Kitchener-Waterloo from Ottawa many years ago.

I want to get a bird, specifically a bird from the poicephalus family. My problem is I am not sure which one. They all seem so very well mannered and easy to care for. The Jardine, The Meyer, The Senegal, The Brown-Headed and The Red-Bellied. I think the only one you don't have is the Brown-Headed and Jardine. I've spent time with a few senegals and they are very cute and mild mannered. The Red-Bellied and Meyer's are harder to come by to have a look so I haven't had a chance yet. I'm a single guy in his 30s who works 9 hours a day, so when I come home, I'd have plenty of time to play with the bird. I'm looking for a bird that is quiet or relatively quiet and that is fun the play with. Do you have any suggestions in regards to my dilemma? Do Meyer's speak better then the rest, or Red-Bellied? Some people have recommended I get a female bird as I am a guy, and helps with the 'bond', is that true?

Bonne Journée Nathascha.

Hi Carey,

As far as picking one species over the other, I don't really have any recommendations. I love them all and the reason I got a Senegal first is because when I was ready to welcome my Poi, she was available and ended up being a gift.

They are pretty similar in general temperament and I do believe that the education each individual bird receives will make a difference in how it turns out.

You mention "play" a lot, and I think maybe Red bellies might be a bit more hands on when it comes to playing, but then again, I have a Meyer's who loves it when I hide things for him to find or attempt to do trick training.

Speaking - there is never any guarantee that a bird will speak. Pois aren't known to be the best talkers and generally, Red bellies have the best reputation out of the smaller guys (aka everyone except Capes and Jardines).

As for the gender, I wouldn't pay any attention to that and have rarely found it to make a difference. In fact, my female Red belly and Senegal prefer me over my boyfriend, the male Red belly has no preference, the youngest male Meyer's has a small preference for me and the older male Meyer's loves men period.
