Thoughts of birdroom expansion

I had promised myself before I moved that once we got the house, I would try to contain the bird stuff to a room, the "official" birdroom (aka the green room). The one exception at that time was that I knew I was going to put the full size Java tree in another room so that there would be something somewhere to accommodate a bird or two if I needed to bring them somewhere else. I had chosen the Java tree since a) I figured it would be a tight fit with the cages in the birdroom (which it turns out it would have been) and b) since it's a nice enough piece that even in the formal living room (where it did end up), it doesn't look out of place and didn't necessarily made the room feel invaded in bird things.

Once we moved, it became apparent.that my initial plans were going to require some tweaking. Initially, the orange room was supposed to act as a guest room/office. Well, since I like having the birds out with me when I'm on the computer (and they like being around me), that changed...the orange/yellow frame came in and that made impossible to add the furniture required for the guest part of the room. Which, really, wasn't all that bad since we scarcely have anyone visit and the room is much more utilized as it is now. And while that structure was put in there so I could have an atom without putting any holes in the ceiling, I am starting to contemplate doing just that and adding a few more things above for the birds to play on. The Boy isn't opposed to the idea and I'm sure they would like to see the cube hanging once more.

Now before I do take the plunge and put the last nail in the coffin of the orange room officially becoming a second birdroom, I'm really trying to figure out the layout I'll want to give it - as I won't want anything hanging above the computer desk area and ideally, I'd like to have a crawler hanging up there..we are in no hurry, but generally, when I start thinking about things like this, I'll want it done fairly quickly when I've made final decisions.

The *new* birdroom - Phase 2

I didn't think I would be posting this so soon after yesterday's post.

But what can I say, I couldn't resist adding things last evening (the fact that a lot of it was in two accessible boxes didn't help).

Now there are more items hanging above the side of the room where Piper's, Léa's, Shade's and Zuri's cages are, as well as a few more items on the other side. The biggest thing added is of course the Get-a-grip net that links both sides of the room together.

The bird who cried wolf

So I decided to try and hang one of the Get-a-grip nets I have in the birdroom.
It was the medium short I had hanging in the birdroom in the apartment - I figured it would do well hung hammock style (instead of straight down like I used to have it) across the room.

It worked (but just barely).

In any case, some of the birds were vocal while we tried hanging it up. They were caged at the time (easier to work that way) and Piper was particularly voicing his discontent in a very loud and ongoing manner. He was NOT a happy guy then and there.

But the funny thing is who do you think was the first bird to go on the net and to seemingly enjoy it being up?

Yeah...I think he's lost all credibility.

The *new* birdroom - Phase 1

As I had mentioned in my previous post, I started hanging things from the ceiling in the new birdroom. It's not finished at this point, but until I make up my mind about what exactly I want to do, it's at least providing places for the birds to hang out when they are in there, other than on the top of their cage or on the 1 standing play gym.

The side above Pixel's, Joey's and Petey's cages looks a bit more filled I'll admit, but it's temporary. In fact, I did try to put the Rosie bridge swing closer to the atom and window, going across the room, but the hooks were slightly too distant. Just hung above cages didn't work as it came too low above the cage - where it is now, it's off the series of cages. Funny thing, I didn't think I would miss the 9' ceilings of the apartment (we have 8' now on the second floor of the house) but I now have to admit they were rather practical when it came to hanging things that come down low.

I'll probably be adding some of that plastic chain along the side of the rooms, so that I can hang a few toys. But I'd like to keep the space in the middle as clear as possible, so I'm not sure I'll want to add more there than there already is, although I am pondering adding one of my larger nets hammock style.

A quick glimpse..

..into the birds' future room!

The (phone) pictures don't really do it justice - the green is nicer in person and it's larger than it appears. In fact, it's larger than the room they are now which is nice, so I'll probably be able to add a few more standing play stands in there.

There is carpet, which isn't ideal, but down the road I will be replacing it. For the time being, I'll continue to use the plastic mats under the cages.

And I find it quite fortunate that it's green, as I was leaning towards a green birdroom, so I won't have to paint!

The move won't happen until mid-May but I'm getting pretty excited!

Birdroom Evolution

Earlier this year I posted pictures of Shade and Piper's first play areas.

Then it hit me that I should do another post about how the play areas / birdroom evolved. I kept pushing it back but now is as good a time as any to finally go forward with the post.

The first rendition of the play area below is what Shade and her brother Nemo shared in the first two years of their life or so. This was a combination of my mom and mine's efforts. This was their specific playing area and eventually that grew to be a bit more elaborate. We mostly used boings, swings and homemade orb-like toys and hung regular toys from the structure.

This came to change when I first moved in with the Boy. I had regrouped Shade and Piper's cage next to each other so I could create a common playing area above the cages, however Joey's addition a month later meant that a second play area was created above his cage as well.

Shade and Piper's play area

Joey's play area

While still somewhat minimal, these play areas started to showcase bigger purchased pieces (such as the big white square hanging structures as well as the bigger swing with natural wood pieces) yet still included hand made items, in this case an improved atom-like play structure. Yet, to keep things affordable, the bigger purchased prices were purchased on sale - hunting for great sales was something I had started taking a serious liking to.

As time went by, the play structure in that one bedroom apartment grew bigger. The addition of Petey also meant I had to provide larger play areas since he wouldn't tolerate the other birds too close to him. Additional items were added and towards the end of our stay there, the hanging gyms looked something like this.

Above Joey and Petey's cages

Again, most of what was hanging was either made by myself or was purchased on sale. I had also, around this time, purchased a Get-A-Grip net although I had no physical place to hang it at the time, it was 50% off so I couldn't say no..

After almost two years, we moved into a bigger apartment. I could now dedicate a whole room to the birds. Being able to move the cages there liberated the living room quite a bit, allowing us to have more elaborate playing areas for them in there too. But it doesn't quite match what was done in the birdroom itself.

At first, it did look rather bare even if you consider that I included most of what used to be hanging in the other apartment (and included that Get-A-Grip net that I was more than happy to finally use), over a short period of time, it did flourish to something more entertaining for the birds I'm sure.

First pictures of the "new" birdroom

Recent video of the birdroom from earlier this year

And while more of the things are now purchased than made nowadays, most of it has always been purchased on sale - it makes things easier and accumulating stuff to hang over the years also helps. I haven't shown pictures of my living room set-ups - mostly because I apparently haven't really taken any - but my philosophy of hunting down bargains also applied there - most of the Java play stands I have in there (all but one really) were discounted before I bought them. The Mother Pluckin' atoms, one was also purchased on sale, same as a Rosie swing that is hanging there. Things don't need to be expensive to be fun for the birds and I do believe they were as happy with the handmade stuff as they are with the purchased items, which really, are more for me as I don't have to spend time making them and the "finished" look is more polished something that appeals to me, NOT the birds. So get creative and hunt down the sales!

The birdroom

I moved my large (and empty) cage from my bedroom to the birdroom to see if it fits and....it does!!

So if I do feel ready when a female Cape parrot becomes available, I'm that much closer to being able to get it (mind you, there are other factors that might impede my decision but the fact that I have the space for the cage in the birdroom is a nice beginning).

While I was at it, I also took a video of the birdroom as it stands today. It gets a bit dark at times when I'm shooting against the window but I assure you the room has much more light.

Morning Peak-a-boos

On the week-ends, the birds get to sleep in a little. Although I'm not entirely sure they relish in it, I do enjoy not having to get up at 6am.

This morning I entered the birdroom around 8:30. I do cover my cages at night so the first thing we need to do in the morning is uncover them. As I'm working my way around the room, I hear a couple of "peak-a-boos" coming from Pixel's cage.

So adorable.

Today's delivery

Not toys.

We actually received the air purifier we ordered a while back. Ironically, I've been thinking about it last night and this morning before it's arrival - wishful thinking? Maybe..

In any case it's here now and I'm thrilled!

For a while I've been browsing different air purifiers, uncertain on which one to get. Finally, the Boy mentioned wanting to redeem some Points and was there anything I wanted. Well, I asked if there were any air purifiers in the items the points could be redeemed for and there was one. We read reviews on it and they were mostly good so voila, "free" air purifier.

We got this one.

It's in the birdroom, as it could not cover all the apartment and it's really the birdroom's air that I want as clean as possible given they do spend a sizable amount of time in there (i.e. during the day when we are at work and then at night).

So far, my only complaint is that it seems to be on the noisy side, but I've often read this was the case with these things so I won't obsess about it.

The birdroom revisited

I have taken more pictures of my birdroom this week-end. It's getting hard to do so without having something get in the way...

Also, there is at least one bird in every picture; try and guess if you can find them all.

Birdroom - The pictures

My dad came and helped me put hooks in the ceiling so I finally got some things up and my the birds' room is actually starting to look like a "birdroom".

It's not quite completed I think..for now it's more than ok, but I might want some more hooks in the future to put another dimension to things..right now, the gyms are mostly going around the room, maybe I'll be able to use the space in the middle better later on.

In any case, the birds seem to be enjoying it.

Pictures of course!

South and East walls (the curtain side is South - wall to wall windows!)

East wall - a bit depleted but I will probably hang more toys later on (Piper, Shade and Zuri's cage, as well as an empty cage are against this wall)

South and West walls

West wall (Petey, Joey and another empty cage against this wall)

North side (closet) - a bit depleted but I might add a chair or something on that side so I wouldn't want too many things overhead

Wide angle fun!

I took my wide angle lens (Sigma 10-20) in the bird room yesterday to take pictures of the stuff hanging from the ceiling. Unfortunately, 10mm is a tad too wide and I wasn't a fan of the distortion so I will have to take more pictures, probably tonight.

I also did try taking some wide angle pictures of the birds and although it wasn't an overwhelming success, some of them came out rather nicely and gave me a nice laugh.

Zuri hanging out (which is my favorite picture out of the two)

Get-a-grip net

I wanted one of those nets for so long.
Then, when Birdbrains.com went out of business last spring and has incredible savings on whatever merchandise was left, I took the plunge and ordered a net.

Unfortunately, it was sitting in my storage closet neatly folded in the box it came in as I didn't have space to hang it.

However, my new bird room has more space and today my dad came to help me put hooks in the (concrete) ceilings and I finally was able to hang my net.

I love it and so do the birds. I was sure it would take them a bit of getting use to before they would actually go on it but to my surprise, all but one of them went on it almost right away.

Here are some pictures.

Joey was first and he seemed to enjoy it the most.

Piper didn't seem to mind it at all either.

Shade wasn't entirely impressed with it in the beginning but started moving around soon enough.

Finally, Zuri acted as if it was always there.

Eggs!

It's no real secret that I would love to add a female Red-bellied parrot and a female Cape parrot to my flock. I've come to terms with the fact that I will have to wait for the female Cape parrot since the price tag is quite high ($2800 CAD) and I just can't justify that type of spending on a bird alone (plus the added cost of a cage, some more toys, vet check-up, extra food, etc, etc) while we are saving to buy a house in the next few years. Also, although we just moved to a bigger space, the bird room has the space for an extra cage like the ones I have my other Pois in (in fact, there is an empty cage like that sitting in there now), but that size is too small for a Cape and I don't have the space for the proper size cage. So yes, the Cape parrot will remain a "dream bird" for now.

But this is not the case for the female Red-bellied. I already have a cage for it. I have a lot of toys suited for that size bird so I wouldn't have to buy as many to begin with. The food would be the same as what I'm already buying. The initial cost of just the bird is considerably less than the Cape parrot ($500-$600 CAD from a breeder) and I can justify spending that much even though we are saving for a house. The only issue I had was finding a breeder. There use to be one in the area, in fact Joey originally came from that person, but for health reason, she stopped breeding. So I had to look elsewhere. Luckily, a friend of mine in Guelph told me about a women from her parrot club who does have a breeder pair. I contacted her this past summer and I have met her at the last Canadian Parrot Conference and have kept contact with her. Well, yesterday I got news that the pair is sitting on eggs! She doesn't know how many since she hasn't been able to take a peak yet, but I'm hoping for fertile eggs and crossing my fingers that if they are fertile, there is at least a female in the clutch.

This is all rather exciting :)

From 5 to 7...to 9 - Day 24 (or Day 2)

Yesterday.

During the week, I usually let the birds out between 30 minutes and an hour in the morning before work, then, when I come home, they come out for another hour, go in for supper, then come back in anywhere between 1 and 2 extra hours.

I'm quite thankful the for the "bird room" now that the Lovebirds are here as well. It allows me to let them out at the same time as the Pois without any risk of attacks. Piper is ok with the Pois since she generally sticks to me, but all three together..that means trouble. However, by letting them have one room to themselves, it took away the opportunity to put a Poi "away" if they got a little restless (Zuri going after Itsy or Itsy and Nemo going after each other). Thankfully, the Pois have been generally well behaved since the Lovebirds came in the portrait.

Back to yesterday, I let the Lovebirds out in the bird room alone while I was in the living room with my boyfriend and the Pois. I did the same thing when we got back home from work. Unfortunately, Piper seemed a bit attention deprived so I figured I'd take the Lovebirds with me out in the living room after supper while my boyfriend remained in the bird room with the Pois. The Lovies loved the extra attention and they were rather sweet..but I did feel slightly guilty leaving the boyfriend with more birds (Piper wanted me and the other two know me better). So I decided to put them back in after an hour.

Apparently, only Shade and Petey behaved perfectly well during that time in the bird room. My boyfriend had things to do so he put Petey in but since Shade did not give him any trouble, I took her out with me in the living room (while the others were put "to bed") to have some special one-on-one (no sharing). She seemed to enjoy it quite a bit and was terribly sweet (although she's normally very sweet). I don't tend to usually have a bird out and not the others, but I have to admit it did feel nice to have some time just with Shade.

From 5 to 7 - Days 20, 21 & 22

This is coming to an end.
My parents will be back next Monday. Not quite sure when Nemo and Itsy will leave, but it should be early next week.

Although it's been a rough beginning, things did settle.
The extra room did help as well; if one of them, most of the time either Nemo, Itsy or Zuri, would get too restless towards another bird they ended up in the bird room for a little independent play. It kept things going smoothly.

This has also showed me that my flock is somewhat receptive to new birds; Zuri was only going after Itsy, never Nemo, and she didn't chase Itsy all the time so if I am to add a Red-bellied and not another Meyer's, maybe she won't have any reaction at all. Shade stopped early on trying to get Nemo and she was always fine with any of my other birds. The others didn't really seem to have noticed that there were two new birds to deal with. Good experience overall.

From 5 to 7 - Days 10, 11 & 12

What a busy week.

It's been back to work and somehow, the days just haven't seemed long enough.
On the bright side, the birds finally seem like they've adjusted to each other being here. Things are going relatively well. Tonight, I had Shade on one shoulder, Nemo on the other and Piper went from the top of my head to down near my chin. No fights broke out.

The flock calling from the birdroom has also decreased a lot.

Now if I could just get around to hanging stuff in that room, I'd be happier. I could let the ones I trust alone with occasional visits since there is not much for them to destroy otherwise in the room.

From 5 to 7 - Day 9

So how did today go?

Not too bad.

They seem to have adjusted fairly well to the move, albeit a bit more vocal at times. I'm assuming this is because they don't see us as often as before. I don't reinforce the "extra chattiness" (it's not full blown out screaming after all) by going to see them and eventually I assume it will subside. They come out of their cages as often as before, they just don't see us hanging around as much, specially on the week-end.
I remember when my mom first got some of her cockatoos and they had to adjust to her schedule, they would scream for her but eventually understood that they would be coming back out and won't utter a peep until then..mind you, if she's late for whatever reason, they know and they start getting vocal.

In any case, they can chat away here as much as they want; the room has no common wall with any neighboring apartments (it's surrounded by our living room, our bedroom and a hallway which has the bathrooms (yes plural) on the other side). When we go in the hallway we don't even hear them (which wasn't always the case with the other apartment).

Oh...and I can now have Shade and Nemo close to one other without Shade flipping out and wanting to attack Nemo. Yeah progress! Unfortunately, I can't say the same with Zuri going after Itsy and Itsy going after the Senegals. However, frequency of dive bombing the others has decreased.
